Everyone wants the last word! This movie may sound dry but it's not! Spellbound follows eight teenagers on their quest to win the 1999 National Spelling Bee.
Since 1925, Scripps Howard newspapers have sponsored an annual spelling bee for grade school students from across the country. In 1999, ten million kids competed for the top prize. Following eight of these students from regional competitions all the way up to the national finals in Washington, D.C., this documentary tells an emotional, heartwarming story of preparation, competition and vocabulary.
Their journeys elicit equal measures of amusement, heartbreak, empathy, and awe, and reconfirm yet again, that the American dream is still alive and well.
