Please join us for a release party for Brian Francis Slattery's second novel, Liberation. As Las Vegas Weekly put it, "Slattery is a big-hearted fabulist with a deeply comic-humane vision.... it is, as you can imagine, a wonderful book. Slattery’s use of language will be most often compared to Thomas Pynchon’s.... But Slattery’s prose is lighter and fleeter." To find out more about the book and read the first chapter, please visit this page.

But I bet you want to hear about the party. The party, which will be held at the historic and unique Sunny's Bar, will start off (at 9) with the author doing several sections of "rocking the book"—that is, doing a reading while backed by no less than five talented musicians. Later in the evening (10:30ish) John Pinamonti will follow with a set of his own music.

And between the sets, we will focus on having a tremendous time. Since we all enjoyed it so much last year, we will be having another non-standard potluck, for which you are encouraged to bring an exotic edible to share with other guests. Participation is not mandatory, but it will be delicious. A representative from the excellent Freebird Books will also be on hand selling copies of Liberation so you can be one of the first on your block to take one home. And who know what else will happenthere's really never a dull moment at Sunny's.

GETTING THERE: Yes, it's Red Hook, but the trip isn't all that bad, and it'll be worth it. Just catch the B61 anywhere along its route (it's an easy transfer from most subways, LIRR, or Brooklyn buses), ride it until it stops, and walk a block or two. Check the MTA Trip Planner for a timing estimate.

EXTRA BONUS EVENT: The week after the release party, Brian will also be appearing at the The Freebird Brooklyn Post-Apocalyptic Book Club. Or, as Brian describes it, "authors and readers get together to--what? Contemplate the end of society as we know it? Discuss plans for building a compound? Engage in a group hug? Come and find out." If you'd like to come by, please RSVP directly at the meetup page.

Love to come but can't make it tonight. Though this has reminded me that I need to read Spaceman Blues. Have fun!

I suck, so I won't be there. But I hope you all have a blast! I expect to see a detailed account of the evening at Tor.com, to make me feel a little better for missing it.
