The John Barleycorn Establishment has been a San Franciscan imbibing paradise for over thirty five years. Besides the friendly staff and the romantic location, tucked away in the crevices of historic Lower Nob Hill, the bar has gone out of its way to house true wonders of San Francisco's past. A few examples: two seats from Seals Stadium that are perched on the far wall, the breakfront from a Pacific Heights home that is over 180 years old, the church pews from St. Mary's and the Cobblestones that line the fireplace that used to make up the Hyde Street pavement. There is much more history packed into this bar, as well as a wonderful library and amazing cocktails.
The bar is headed for extinction in June, when its lease runs out and the new building owner does not see fit to renew it. It seems an appropriate time to appreciate this wonderful establishment, meet the people behind it, as well as honor the neighborhood, which is so very rich in San Francisco literary history. So, that all being said, the next San Francisco Appreciation Society Event will take place at The John Barleycorn and will feature readings, by very special guests, from McTeague by Frank Norris (which takes place in 1884, three blocks away), Dashell Hammet (who called this neighborhood home), Jack London (who wrote the novel John Barleycorn), Robert Burns (who wrote the poem) and much more. There will be a tour of all the bar's museum-quality pieces of San Francisco history, and special drinks.
We hope to see you all there. For more information on the bar, its history and its current state of affairs, please visit
