The Teapot Dome Scandal scarred the presidency of Warren Harding. It was so bad, that this pre-television president ventured across America to try to regain the favor of his constituency. And it just might have worked--besides the fact that his whole cabinet was as crooked as a pretzel--but Pres Harding died during his venture....after checking in to the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, supposedly already sick from a bit of fish he had eaten days earlier...
On Aug. 2, 1923, he was no more. Some think it was from the bad fish...some think his good wife poisoned him....and some think that Harding was in effect a Vampire and met an end of a different kind. Regardless, he was and is remembered as a president below the American standard....a president who looked high, while crawling low…and yet his death in our fair city connects us in some strange and outer-worldly way.
Come pay your respects with the San Francisco Appreciation Society as we raise a glass in honor of the President who was good enough to die in our fair city. This year, we will also have in our thoughts Joseph Griffin, an Ontario millionaire who was killed in Palace Hotel elevator 100 years ago this year, in 1910. Bring your thoughts and your remembrances….they will be included in out toast.
