In 1908 a four story building rose out of the recently tamed swamps and bandit filled sand dunes of what had been popularly known as the Wilderness. It started off mysteriously...maybe it was a bar....maybe it was a cafe...but nevertheless by the time the 1940s came around it was nothing short of a legendary establishment and home to some of the most colorful people in the city. From old sea hands to blue collar regulars to the staffs of KQED and the fledgling Rolling Stone Magazine--The Hotel Utah, or as it was called previously The Transbay Tavern, or as referred to by Dirty Harry as Al's, participated in the rise of modern day San Francisco. Dianne Feinstein left her hat on the wall. Robin Williams and Whoppie Goldberg told some of their first jokes, Cake, American Music Club and The Counting Crows broke out of the back room. Please join the San Francisco Appreciation Society in a centennial celebration of this one-of-a-kind place. Helping us to recount the Utah saga will be a diverse group of former owners, barmaids and men, entertainers and writers; and even Al's daughter Patti Opatz who grew up, a catholic school girl inside the wild bullet scarred walls of San Francisco's most colorful living drinking and entertainment establishment. This is a two-parter: The Ceremony in true SFAS fashion...filled with suprise guests and general cheer...this is the FREE part of the evening...and then the musical Hoedown follows that will last into the night. We hope to see you all there!
